The Saint Peter's Basilica was first constructed in the 4th century and commissioned by Constantine the Great. That building stood for almost 1200 years until 1506, when it was demolished to rebuild a greater structure. The current Basilica took over 120 years to build and was worked on by every great artist and architect of the late Renaissance and Baroque periods. The Basilica can be visited seven days per week and is only partially closed on Wednesday mornings when the "Papal Audience" is in St. Peter's Square. You can climb the Dome of St. Peter's Basilica by entering the security entrance and following signs to the Dome. You can take the stairs the entire way up, or pay a few extra euros to utilize the elevator. Our Dome climb tours enter early when the weather is cooler and there are fewer to no lines.
